How far I’ll go :

The cracks and streaks of Jupiter’s moon Europa are on full display in this image captured by our Juno spacecraft as it flew 945 miles (1,521 km) above the icy surface. The rough terrain of the moon is revealed in the boundary between day and night, which highlights the fractures that crisscross Europa.

Scientists speculate that Europa’s icy surface is between 10 to 15 miles (15 to 25 km), and it lies in a large saltwater ocean 40 to 100 miles (60 to 150 km) deep. With an immense ocean likely hidden beneath its surface, Europa is one of the most promising places in the solar system to look for life beyond Earth. In Fall 2024, we will launch the Europa Clipper mission to explore the Jovian moon, searching for evidence of life, and studying the moon’s chemistry, geology, and ocean.

Image description: Europa’s is partially illuminated, with brown and tan streaks carving the icy surface. Shadow envelopes the moon’s left side, while black space surrounds its right side.
