I’ll follow you into the dark :

⁣In the constellation Canes Venatici (the Hunting Dogs) 25 million light-years away, two galaxies mingle, creating gravitational waves in their wake. The galaxy to the left, nicknamed the Whirlpool galaxy due to its swirling structure, passes in front of NGC 5194, stretching the spiral galaxy’s long arms.⁣

The gravitational waves from NGC 5194 ripple within the Whirlpool galaxy, creating clouds of dust and gas, which collapse into newly-forming stars, shown in pink. The Whirlpool’s most massive stars battle torrents of radiation and stellar wind, dotting the galaxy’s arms in dots of blue.⁣

Image description: The Whirlpool galaxy shines bright with a yellow-white core and spiral dotted arms in blue, pink, purple, and brown. In the upper right portion of the image, a yellowish galaxy appears to tug at one of the Whirlpool’s arms. Small stars and galaxies spot the image, giving small color to the blackness of space.⁣
