Weekend vibe: Radiating positive energy :
A closer look at the universe’s most energetic particles – cosmic rays – consisting of mainly of protons that move at the speed of light. Young supernovas have been observed to possess stronger magnetic fields and the highest-energy cosmic rays. When faced with interstellar gas, cosmic rays produce gamma rays. This image shows where these remnants emit radiation that are a billion times more energetic than visible light.
Cassiopeia A, a supernova remnant, has been detected to have extremely bright gamma rays, which are shown here in magenta. The supernova spans about 10 light-years, and is about 11,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia. Cas A was created by a massive stellar explosion in our galaxy about 340 years ago.
