Let’s make the most of this beautiful day. Won’t you be my neighbor?⁣ :

⁣It’s a beautiful day in this galactic neighborhood captured by @NASAHubble, but things aren’t as close as they appear. The four large spiral galaxies featured in this snapshot seem near each other, but they are quite distant. This image is a great example of the challenge of determining the separation between galaxies from a 2-dimensional point of view.⁣

For instance, the largest galaxy to the right, NGC 1356, appears to be directly adjacent to the small galaxy overlapping one of its arms, LEDA 95415. In reality, they are nearly 300 million light-years apart. Meanwhile, the galaxy to the left, IC 1947, is only around 400,000 away from NGC 1356 despite seeming further off in 2-D.⁣

Image description: A collection of four galaxies stands out against black space littered with stars and other tiny galaxies. In the right half of the image, a large spiral galaxy is joined by two smaller spirals – one directly above, and another overlapping one of its arm on the left. A fourth spiral galaxy stands alone on the left side of the image.⁣
